Top 5 Family Photoshoot Locations In Maplewood, South Orange and Beyond
Choosing the right spot for your family photos should be a fun part of the planning. You want to pick something that feels like you, goes with the season and where you know your kids (and pet) will be comfortable. In Essex County and nearby areas, we’re surrounded by gorgeous parks, busy downtowns, and scenic waterfronts that can add something special to your photos without taking away from the focus on your family.
Let me help you find the right spot. Here are my top five favorite locations for family photos in and around Maplewood and South Orange.
Local Parks: Memorial Park, South Mountain Reservation, and Verona Park: We’re lucky we have access to so many beautiful open spaces in North Jersey which allow for some of the best family photo sessions. Memorial Park in Maplewood offers stone bridges, tree-lined paths and both a creek and the “turtle pond” that look idyllic in every season. South Mountain Reservation has open fields, woodsy trails and waterfalls for kids to run around and play. Verona Park, with its lake, pathways, tall grass and gorgeous bridge, is another favorite for outdoor portraits (plus it was created by the Olmsted Brothers who designed Central Park). Each of these places offers a mix of nature and relaxed space for authentic family connection.
Maplewood Village and Downtown South Orange: If you love small town energy and local charm, Maplewood Village and downtown South Orange are perfect backdrops. Favorite storefronts, train station, doorways, coffee shops and alleyways create a colorful yet relaxed vibe for your session. These downtown spots are ideal for lifestyle photos that feel warm, vibrant and like your doing your usual weekend activity.
At Home: Sometimes the best place for family photos is right at home. Your yard, front porch or your street can offer a comfy and memorable setting. It’s familiar for kids, easy to move around, and naturally brings out organic smiles and relaxed moments (think all piled into bed together, bare feet on grass, favorite colorful toys and snacking together).
Jersey City Murals and Liberty State Park: For a more urban and creative backdrop, I usually recommend Jersey City. There are numerous colorful murals that can add personality to your photos or Liberty State Park with its boardwalk, views of the NYC skyline, the waterfront, and open green space (plus some great architectural options too).
Asbury Park: If you’re willing to drive an hour to have a fun photoshoot in NJ, Asbury Park delivers with the beach, the boardwalk, murals and fresh air. You can walk barefoot on the beach, pick up ice cream on the boardwalk or pose in front of one of the many murals. More photos from this Asbury Park family photo session can be found here.
