How To Dress For Your Family Photoshoot
I’ve photographed hundreds of families and can tell you that you want your photos to capture your family as it is in its current authentic state. The images should feel natural and like they best represent you and your family.
Start with a color palette and then build around it by adding textures, layers, and accessories. Keep it comfortable with cozy and moveable fabrics so your kids can jump into your arms or you can sit down on a picnic blanket. If you usually wear glasses, keep them on for the photos so you recognize yourself when your family photo is hanging in your house.
Below are some suggestions and examples for styling inspiration for a family photoshoot in and around Maplewood and South Orange, NJ.
Fall: Muted, warm earth tones go well with fall grass and bright foliage in a park. Wearing layers, flowing dresses and fuzzy sweaters look great in photos and keep the kids feeling relaxed.
Summer: Pops of color, florals or other patterns are great for the summer. Although I’m always a fan of bare feet, especially like from this at-home family photoshoot in South Orange, NJ. More photos from this session can be found here.
Spring: Denim, jewel tones or light neutrals are a great compliment to the spring flowers and cherry blossom trees during a spring family photoshoot in Northern NJ. More inspiration can be found from another spring family mini session in Taylor Park in Millburn, NJ.
Winter: The winter season is a great opportunity to cozy up and wear bright accessories. Dark neutrals with a textured scarf or a colorful beanie will do the trick like this family session looking to create a colorful holiday card at Maplewood Memorial Park in NJ.
