Maternity Photographer Maplewood NJ | Spring Session at Cross Estate Gardens

The first weekend of spring is always the best and kind of sneaks up on you. I love the shift in the air, the longer light and the rebirth of everything. It felt especially fitting to photograph this maternity session during that exact moment of transition.

As a maternity photographer serving Maplewood, South Orange and surrounding areas, I’m always looking for real life elements that mirror the seasons. Early spring has a quiet, subtle beauty…not yet in full bloom, but full of promise. It felt connected to photographing this couple waiting to meet their baby for the very first time.

This couple brought such a calm excitement to the session. You could feel their love in the way they looked at each other, the smiles they shared and the gentle way they held onto each other during the shoot. There’s a softness to first pregnancies…a mix of balance, caution, curiosity and eagerness to learn.

We met at Cross Estate Gardens, a location known for its beautiful grounds and historic charm. While the gardens weren’t fully green yet, the bare branches, stone pathways and soft early-season light gave a strong and ethereal backdrop.

By the time these gardens are filled with color and warmth, they’ll be home with their new baby in their arms. Capturing this quiet, early spring moment will give them something to look back on. It’ll be a sweet reminder of the quiet before everything changed.
