New Jersey Family Photographer | Best Natural Poses for Family Photos

Here’s a little look at how I guide my family sessions so they feel easy, natural, and most of all…fun!

1) Cuddle Puddle

I always start a photo session with the one parents are usually picturing before they arrive. It’s the group shot and a perfect opportunity for the kids to acclimate to the location and to me, if we’ve never worked together before.

Everyone comes in close: kids in arms, hands wrapped around necks and waists, heads leaning in. It’s less about perfect posing and more about connecting…lots of closeness and hands always visible and touching each other.

We’ll move through a few variations: looking at the camera, looking at each other, a few smiles, some laughs and a combo of standing and sitting (maybe on a bed, a bench, a bridge/wall or a blanket).

Once the “money shot” is out of the way, the pressure is off and we can switch into more movement and the in-between moments that give variety to your gallery.

2) Kids’ Level

One of the easiest ways to create fun family photos is to physically come down to a child’s level. Whether they’re wrapping themselves around a parent’s legs, peeking out from behind a tree, or bouncing on a bed at home, this perspective always makes the image feel more intimate and true to them.

Instead of asking kids to smile, I let them move, hide, cling, and play. You gotta meet the kid with where they’re at. You can crouch down, sit, or even shoot from the ground or floor to match their height. That’s when I usually see their real expressions.

Sometimes I’ll shift perspective too so the kids are in the foreground while parents are slightly out of focus in the background. It gives a more layered feel…keeping everyone connected in the frame.

3) The Transition

Some of the best photos happen on the way to the next one.

Instead of stopping, I like to keep everyone moving with a walk: toward the camera, away from it, or across the frame. Hold hands, 1-2-3 swing, play a little “follow the leader”, or scoop someone up for a piggyback ride.

It takes the pressure off posing and replaces it with something that feels relaxed. The kids usually forget that we’re taking photos during this moment.

4) The Sillies

The best advice another photographer gave me is to figure out your end result, and THEN think of the prompt to help get them there. And sometimes the best thing you can do at a session is let kids be kids. Games are usually the best way to set that tone of fun.

Have them run straight into their parents’ arms, spin in a quick round of ring-around-the-rosie, or stand back while parents count to three and run in for a playful “get you” moment…complete with tickles, hugs, and lots of laughs.

This is also the perfect time for silly faces, which every kid seems to want to do. The more expressive, the better.

Once we’ve had some fun and the kids are fully in their element, the parents get a little moment too. Sometimes that looks like them standing together for a few quiet shots alone or while the kids are running around them or just off to the side collecting flowers, acorns or rocks.

5) Lean In

After all the movement and play, we slow things down a bit and bring everyone back in.

This is where I’ll give simple prompts: whisper something silly, nose nuzzles, squeeze super tight, give a quick kiss on the cheek or tickle each other. It’s less about posing and more about interaction, which often creates those genuine expressions.

I like to mix up the pairings here too: just mom and one child, dad with the kids, siblings together or girls only, etc. Then you end up with a variety of images.

Bonus: The Solo

In the middle of all the group moments, I aim to make space for each child to have a little time on their own.

It’s a chance to give them some focused attention, and capture who they are right now: serious, feisty, introverted, giggly, etc. It doesn’t take long and often feels the most personal giving the parents a chance to see their child from someone else’s point of view.
